Claim Your Activism Project

Last week, you had class time to discuss your group activism project. You developed some good ideas!    When you decide what you want to do,  please post it in the comment section with a list of the people (first names only) in your group.  Turn a more complete list (with last names) into me on paper.  Your formal proposal, including description, goals, steps, timeline, participant roles, resources required, and assessment, is due at the midterm. Some ideas for your activism project include:

  • developing a way (workshop, video, event) to help educate men about rape
  • developing a way (workshop, video, event) to help educate woman about rape
  • creating a women's history walking tour for downtown Charleston
  • creating a women's history walking tour for the C of C campus
  • pick a legislative issue on which to educate people on our campus.  You can visit the website of the American Association of University Women and click on the "Act" button to find links to information about the latest issues before Congress.  Or contact the local AAUW chapter and find out what they are working on. Develop a plan (workshop, video, event) to help educate our campus.
  • develop a plan to help educate the campus about issues of gender and disability
  • develop a plan to help educate the campus about women and heart disease
  • develop, publish, and distribute a "Check Up on Your Relationship" brochure, which will include a checklist of signs of emotional/physical/sexual abuse and resources to get help.
  • organize and present a forum on healthy dating practices.
  • organize a clothes drive for a local women's shelter
  • research gay rights in South Carolina and set up a forum on changing the laws
  • combat hate.  Find out about hate groups in our state and educate the campus about them. Go to the Southern Poverty Law Center website.  Click on "Hate Map."  Then enter your state to discover which hate groups operate where you live.  Then click on "Intelligence Files" to learn more about those hate groups.  You can also find information at these sites:
